There's good hip-hop instrumentals...and then there's great hip-hop instrumentals. TLO represents the latter. From Toronto, Canada, TLO shows the might of hip-hop coming out of the region (ex. Arthur McArthur, Lunice). He brings a fresh taste to hip-hop with an arrangement of samples that combined express the true meaning of crescendo. In addition, he brings top notch production value to the material he puts out. Kicks, snares, and high hats are all crisp - great attention to detail. All this while still keeping with that irresistible old school 80's/90's feel. Keep letting the good times roll TLO.
My long time friend, Jackson Bengtsson aka "Misto Lion & JBear" recently released a few sick tracks. Definitely deserves some publicity. Be sure to share this on facebook/twitter.
Today I was doing some ipod cleanup when I found this group. Kraak & Smaak.
A fusion between funk and electro, Kraak & Smaak really knows how to electrify traditional disco.
Kraak & Smaak is a group out of the Netherlands made up of Oscar de Jong, Mark Kneppers and Wim Plug. Having started in 2003 debuting an awesome mix on BBC 1, their success has allowed them to continue making music up to the present day (10 years!).
Good to find this on my ipod. Definitely won't delete these songs anytime soon.
This guy is an insane bass player. Known best for his work with Flying Lotus, Thudercat has been building up a prominent name for himself. Check out his set on NPR debuting his new LP, "Apoclapyse".
Was flipping through majestic's Youtube channel and found Oll-Zen through his 'Skills' remix. Found out he puts out some legit classic hip-hop remixes. Find him out bandcamp.
If you need to cool down from a stressful day, this will do the trick. Lapalux's soothing melody and light beats, lets you drown in serenity. Lapalux's real name is Stuart Howard, a 22 year old producer from Essex, England. Of course he is signed to my favorite record label, Brainfeeder. A label that includes awesome artists such as Flying Lotus, Nosaj Thing, Gaslamp Killer, Daedalus, etc. It's been awhile since I have last listened to Lapalux's music, which is why I am delighted to see him releasing his new music video, "Without You". It looks like he is doing some promotion for his new album "Nostalchic" which will come out on March 25th. If you like his music, be sure to support his new album!
One old school artist, Masta Ace has now released his new album "Son of Yvonne". Using instrumentals from MF Doom's Special Herbs volume, this album sounds damn good. The album is dedicated to Masta Ace's experience growing up and learning the ways of hardwork, creativity, and good ol motherly love. The skits are pretty damn funny and overall I'd give this album an 8.5 out of 10. Good listens.
Toro Y Moi is one my favorite indie/electronic artists. I remember hearing "Talamak" and "Low Shoulder" a couple year ago and was blown away. With only a keyboard, mic, and guitar, Toro Y Moi stretches the uses of such basic instruments. An interesting fact about Toro Y Moi is that he has worked with such artists such OFWGKTA, and Nosaj Thing. I have to admit, it's hard to imagine Tyler and Toro hanging out.
Toro Y Moi has just released his new album, "Anything In Return" and I would say it's his best album yet. His rolling bass tones and high pitched synths are why I say this. He has done a great job taking these sounds and using the the right headphone space to give that "surround sound feel". After listening to this album, I'm convinced Toro Y Moi needs relationship therapy. Many of the lyrics on this album talk about the different emotional struggles Toro Y Moi goes through, each one a meaning of it's own. It's works well with the music but I find it quite repetitive (even over his career) after awhile.
At this point I am convinced Germany is an epicenter of classic hip-hop producing. FloFilz and Beatsofreen are two perfect examples of this. From the use of beautiful jazz samples to the design of perfectly layered kicks, you can't not head bop to this shit. Literally. In fact I can't find a thing about them other than a small line on FloFilz Facebook page reading, "jazz sample based oldschool shit from germany".
Seems like electro has taken over the music scene these days. Nevertheless, Tame Impala is putting it down bringing late 80's psychedelic rock to your doorstep. From Perth, Australia this band has been around since 07' putting down two albums known as "Innerspeaker" and "Lonerism". Their music definitely reminds of the Beatles and brings me back to days that I was never alive. Enjoy.
Shoot I do't know if it's an album an EP or one track but I'm pumped for Relativity 3. Lemaitre is a damn good disco funk artist from Oslo, Norway and they bring the fire. Funny enough they used to be competitive gamer's until they decided to take on a music career. Back when they first started, they were good friends with a guy named, Joe or "joehands0me". Joe was a popular game footage editor/music blogger and popularized their tracks quickly becoming viral. They definitely deserve the success.
